just past the naked golfer.

to get to town, people don't just drive here.
people ride trains.

to get to a friends house, people don't just drive here.
people walk.

it's been quite a change for us lazy Americans to not drive everywhere in our cars.
i feel like i am getting in shape.... or maybe just equalizing out all the food we eat here!

but the best route we have taken is definitely the one to & from the train station. the first day we went to town, riekje explains.... "when you get off the train, cross over the foot bridge, go straight until you see the naked golfer, then catch the foot path to the left, then go straight for a while, then our house is on the right."

we were like.... "what? naked golfer?"..... she just replies, "you'll see....."
well, obviously we have found our way & said hello to our naked golfer friend many times.
you'd think they would just use street signs!

Side note:
our Spanish is bad. really bad. meaning that when people talk to us, we either just stare at them or go & get the dictionary from our bag.

sometimes, people stop us on the road to get directions & when they see me, they think i will just help them on their way. when we answer, "no habla espanol" or "no say".... they get kinda mad. they think I am Spanish & just don't want to help them.

but sometimes, it works in our favor..... like when we get free coffee.
we walked down to the cafe a couple mornings ago for breakfast & realized that when we got there, we had forgotten the beloved dictionary! although a little panicked, we decided to stay & just ask for some water & go from there.
waiter man comes, very Spanish at that & we painfully ask for water. he replies with the quickest Spanish mumble.... we smile & conclude that they don't just give out water.... so next try, we finally order a cafe con leche (coffee with milk). but this point, we would have taken mud in a cup.

well we sip, we talk, we read there for a while & want to pay. the table next to us comes & goes & we get ready to ask where we get the check (cuenta). he says nooo blah blah blah... thinking they just don't do checks here we get the money out to be ready next time he comes outside. We hold up a 20 Euro as he comes & he smile, say no a couple of times, and ignore us the rest of the time.... after deliberating for about 20 minutes, we decide that yes, he meant to give it to us for free! yeah!

so leave a little note on a napkin:
gracias! from 2 little american friends.

Aaah! I just read this whole blog, looked at every picture, and watched that video. oh yes.
I miss you two immensely. I am so glad you are learning motherly duties, and SO happy to learn you are finding flowers and naked statues. I feel like your trip is already complete.

Here. I'll give you a good Spanish word for the day. Today's word?
Clothes. La ropa.
In a sentence?
¿Dónde está mi ropa?
Where are my clothes?

Very exciting.
